How Long Does LTO Storage Last?
In this fast-paced, data-driven world, we are always looking for ways to record memories and store information. Technologies change rapidly, and a device at the height of data storage innovation one minute could become obsolete the next. However, one consistent choice for digital media storage has been LTO. LTO storage is seen as a long-term solution for preserving important digital records, boasting a lifespan of up to 30 years.
In this blog, we look at LTO storage, how long it lasts, and how you can optimise your data storage with LTO.
What is LTO?
LTO, or Linear Tape-Open, is a magnetic tape form of data storage. Often referred to as LTO Ultrium, it has become a core choice for those looking to archive valuable data. Commonly used for backups, archiving or data transfer, it is widely praised for its comprehensive storage capabilities and long lifespan.
The latest iteration of LTO can store a huge 45 TB of compressed data, providing you with an impressive wealth of space. According to techtarget.com, we are likely to see this storage grow exponentially over the next 10 years. It is rumoured that the LTO-14 (we are currently on version LTO-9) will break a 1-petabyte capacity within the decade. This equates to 1,000 TB, or 1,000,000 GB. As mentioned earlier, technology moves quickly, so we could soon find that a few terabytes of storage will no longer be sufficient.
What are the advantages of LTO storage?
LTO allows the user to preserve vast quantities of data for long periods of time, Later, we will cover its shelf life and how to enhance it, as well as why so many are turning to tape.
LTO data storage is proven to be more reliable than the common hard drive (HDD). This is largely due to the Error Correction Code incorporated into the LTO. Operating at two levels known as C1 and C2, errors are detected and corrected with residual errors being deleted if necessary. These C1 and C2 codes are incorporated into the data before it’s written onto the tape, and then verified after being put to tape. This ensures an extremely low error rate that places LTO at around 10,000 times more reliable than a typical HDD.
With built-in encryption for safe storing and movement of data, LTO storage also offers additional security that other storage devices may not be able to provide.
Perhaps one of the biggest advantages of LTO is the storage lifespan. LTO storage can last for up to 30 years, subject to how the tapes are looked after and maintained. In general, data stored on LTO is normally good for as many as 300 full-file passes, or 20,000 load and unload cycles. It could be unlikely that you’ll require this much use, but if you do, it’s important to ensure you optimise the storage of your LTO.
One final benefit to note is the running cost. LTO uses much less power than disc drives; LTO.org have estimated that a conversion of 33% of disk space to LTO could save 200 million megawatt hours across the globe each year.
What data can be written to LTO storage?
From written documents to photos, and from video files to games, an LTO tape can store vast levels of data from many mediums.
How should LTO be stored to preserve the data on it?
As with anything, poor care can lead to issues and LTO storage is no different. Magnetic tape thrives in certain conditions, and if its environment is harmful, the capability of your LTO storage could be drastically reduced by up to 20 years.
To benefit from optimal preservation of your valuable data, you should look to a professional storage facility that regulates how items are stored. At Stockroom London, our facility is secure and closely monitored, with an ambient temperature suitable for LTO, to ensure maximum protection of your stored data.
Ideally, magnetic tapes such as LTO need temperatures between 15 to 25 °C with a humidity level between 20-50%. This can vary across the range of LTO models currently available, but is generally a suitable guideline sufficient for all LTO types.
Should you require LTO tape to be transported, it must be packed correctly. We can advise you on this and offer comprehensive guidance. In addition, if you are receiving LTO, it would be wise not to use it immediately. Your tape will need to acclimatise to a normal operating environment before use, which could take up to 24 hours.
LTO storage is a fantastic way to keep your data safe, secure and retrievable. With an impressively long shelf life (30 years if looked after correctly), and huge capacity, you can refine your workplace storage needs and greatly enhance efficiency. At Stockroom London, we offer an LTO backup service for portable hard drives which includes 5 years of offline storage in our specialist warehouse. With offline capabilities greatly reducing the risk of cyber-attack or general data loss, you can rest assured that you and your business remain fully compliant at all times.
