This ensures an extremely low error rate that places LTO at around 10,000 times more reliable than a typical HDD.

It could be unlikely that you’ll require this much use, but if you do, it’s important to ensure you optimise the storage of your LTO.

One final benefit to note is the running cost. LTO uses much less power than disc drives; LTO.org have estimated that a conversion of 33% of disk space to LTO could save 200 million megawatt hours across the globe each year.

How should LTO be stored to preserve the data on it?

As with anything, poor care can lead to issues and LTO storage is no different. Magnetic tape thrives in certain conditions, and if its environment is harmful, the capability of your LTO storage could be drastically reduced by up to 20 years.
